Gymnema is a woody, climbing shrub, which grows in the tropical forests of central and southern India. Gymnema Sylvestre has a long history of uses reaching as far back as the first century AD when it was noted that it destroyed excess sugars. In modern India extracts of Gymnema leaves are used along with other Ayurvedic compounds to address diabetes mellitus.
In a 1970 study completed by Joseph E. Sinsheimer, Gymnema sylvestre produced no contraindications and no side effects. Further research has shown it that it may bring down glucose levels through regeneration of the pancreatic islets and beta cells.
